Divorce rates among all categories of Americans are down, and in fact, lower than they are believed to be. However, in one category of Americans, divorce rates are actually on the increase. Among baby boomers, who are now in their 50s and 60s, divorce rates are actually back on the increase.

According to an analysis, which was based on a new interpretation of data, divorce rates, overall, are at the approximately 40% mark instead of 50% which was widely believed earlier. However, among baby boomer Americans, the divorce rate is about 50%. In fact, the above-50 group was the only group in which divorce rates actually increased over the past two decades.

What explains the reasons for this increasing divorce rate in this group? According to some analysts, baby boomers are unique because of the circumstances in which they were created. Baby boomers began lives as pampered children, born to parents enjoying a booming economy. They had little respect for the past, and were much more rebellious with their “sex, drugs and rock ‘n roll” motto. This group is known for pushing back against social boundaries, and challenging the status quo. This is also a substantial- sized group, currently constituting approximately a quarter of the American population.

Analysts believe that baby boomers have suffered from some confusion about what constitutes a traditional marriage, and also had had different married lives and sexual relationships, compared to their parents. It could be that the baby boomers continue to struggle to remain young, even as they move into their 50s and 60s, and try to be as sexually active as they were before. Even at this age, they may reject traditional definitions and parameters of a marriage which could possibly explain those high divorce rates.
